FAQ

  • For UK canals, perch respond best to small, natural-looking lures. The most effective sizes are:

    • Soft plastics: 2–3 inches (50–75mm)

    • Hard lures / crankbaits: 35–55mm

    • Blade baits / spinners: 3–7g

These sizes imitate the small prey commonly found in canals - gudgeon, minnows and fry. In clearer water or when perch are finicky, downsizing to 1.5-2 inch lures can dramatically increase bites.

Natural colours like Ayu, Perch, Smelt, Motor Oil and Brown are consistent performers in clear water.
In murkier canals or low light, switch to chartreuse, junebug, orange, or UV-reactive patterns to increase visibility.

Both catch perch, but they shine in different situations:

  • Paddle-tails → Best for covering water and finding active fish.

  • Creature baits / worms → Better for pressured or cold-water fish that want a subtle presentation.
Carolina, Texas  or light jig rigs suit creature baits especially well.
